Data maturity instrument

Data maturity, scored by the people who hold each part of it.

DataPulse is a structured review of how an organisation governs, manages and uses its data. It measures capability on a five-level maturity model across eight dimensions, and it reports the distance between where the organisation is and where it intends to be.

It is not a flat survey. The same question is put to different roles, and each role's answer carries its own weight: an impact factor set per role and per question, multiplied by an experience factor derived from the respondent's SFIA level. Executive vision and operational grip are therefore scored as distinct perspectives, not averaged into one voice.

The instrument is delivered as an engagement: participants answer in their own words and on their own scores, and the result is a weighted maturity position, the gaps that follow from it, and a draft report with a consultant's analysis on top.

Current build: 159 questions across four role banks — Data Steward (24), Chief Data Officer (25), Data Engineer (50), Data Consumer (60). The instrument runs the Data Maturity assessment; Data Risk, Data Fairness, AI Readiness and AI Maturity are the next assessment types planned on the same framework.

One assessment, a demonstration organisation: 4 participants, 159 questions answered (one answer per applicable question, coverage 1.00), roles CDO at SFIA 7, Data Steward at 5, Data Engineer at 4, Data Consumer at 3. Grey marks are as-is; ink marks are to-be; the accent numeral at right is the gap the engagement is scoped against. Scores are the engine's weighted mean, Σ(score × impact × experience) ÷ Σ(impact × experience), on the 1–5 maturity scale. Reproduced from the instrument's own draft report; no figure on this site is hand-entered.

Eight dimensions, four pillars

Every question belongs to one of eight dimensions and to one of four pillars — People, Process, Technology, Business Value. The pillars describe where a finding lives; the dimensions are what gets scored.

Scope

The assessment is set at one organisational level — enterprise, business unit, business function, information domain, or project — and the question set is filtered to that scope, so the same instrument reads a department and a group on the same scale.

Repetition

DataPulse is built to be run again. Scores are comparable across cycles on the same scope, which makes it a benchmark rather than a one-off diagnostic: the second assessment is where movement is visible.

What the engagement leaves behind

A weighted maturity position per dimension, the as-is and to-be scores behind it, and the gaps ranked by size. Behind the scores sit the participants' verbatim inputs — justifications, good and bad practices, proposed improvements, business benefits — kept per role so the report can say who holds a view, not just that a view exists.
